Both models work well. They suit different situations, and the right choice depends mostly on how clear your requirements are today.
Choose fixed cost when the scope is clear
If you can describe what you want built, we estimate it and deliver for an agreed price. You know the cost and timeline before work starts. This suits an MVP, a website or a defined set of features.
Choose a dedicated engineer when the work keeps growing
If you have a backlog that keeps changing, an engineer who works only on your product adapts as priorities shift. You can choose a full-time engineer for continuous development, or a part-time engineer when the workload is smaller.
Consider an hourly bucket in between
If your work is varied or unpredictable, a bucket of hours gives you flexibility without a long commitment. You buy at least 40 hours, spend them on any task or technology, and the hours never expire.
Questions to ask yourself
- Can I write down exactly what I want built?
- Will the requirements change once people start using the product?
- Do I need someone available every week, or only now and then?
- Do I have someone who can manage the engineer day to day?
If most of your answers are "yes" to the first and "no" to the others, fixed cost is likely right. If they point the other way, a dedicated engineer or a bucket will serve you better.
